Rebecca is a gothic tale full of lush language and suspenseful mystery; it is the story of a young woman haunted by the ever present reminders of her husband's first wife. This novel is found on the ALA's top 100 Banned or Challenged classics list. Some of the reasons might include secret source codes being hidden in the text during World War II, but they were apparently never used due to the belief that security was compromised. It also had controversial subtext. After du Maurier died in 1989, her biographers were able to be truthful about her life. It emerged that she was bisexual and had fallen in love with her publisher's wife, Ellen Doubleday. If you are a collector of banned books, this is a novel you want on your library shelf.
