Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man won the National Book Award for Fiction, the first for an African American writer. It explored a Black man’s experiences of race and identity on a journey from the South to Harlem. Ellison was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and National Medal for the Arts in 1985. Invisible Man remains on the American Library Association's list of most challenged books. For instance the Randolph County School Board at one point had banned the book a parent complained about the language, rape and incest, and even its depiction of one character’s “loss of innocence.” if you are a collector of banned books, this is a novel you want on your library shelf.
