London  wrote Call of the Wild to share some of what he saw while living for a year in the Yukon Territory. He wrote it to convey the theme of transformation and how, over a period of time, one's entire life and intentions can change. Buck transformed from a pet to a wild dog from the first to the last chapter. The vicious dog fights, mistreatment of animals and harsh undertones in Jack London's tale of the Klondike gold rush have spurred censorship calls since its publication in 1903. If you are a collector of banned books, this is a novel you want on your library shelf.
