1930 LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER by DH Lawrence First Edition Hardcover Pirated Copy
Early Pirated Edition. Publisher's original black cloth, lettered in black on a label on the spine. 313 untrimmed pages. Wear along both sides of the spine. The first edition was printed privately in Florence by Lawrence's good friend Pino Orioli. It was followed by numerous pirated editions and later several expurgated versions. LADY CHATTERLEY was the first novel prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act. The pirated edition offered here was printed just shortly after the true first edition. It was not until 1960 that Penguin Books in London took on the risk of publishing it in full and was consequently prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act 1959. The later acquittal proved a victory for not only the eminent authors who appeared as witnesses at the celebrated trial (including E.M. Forster, R. Hoggart, and H. Gardner) and Penguin Books, but for freedom of the press, writing and publishing in general. If you are a collector of banned books, this is a novel you definitely want on your shelf.
