The Second Sex is a 1949 book by the French existentialist Simone de Beauvoir, in which she discusses the treatment of women throughout history. The book was banned by the Vatican, because of its passages on the functions of the female body and descriptions of lesbian sex. Beauvoir also antagonised the church by linking the "subordinate" role of mothers, wives and prostitutes in one passage. If you are a collector of banned books, this is one you want on your library shelf.
