“The Mandarins” is a call to the intelligenzia not to stand idle while the most important issues of society are being decided by politicians.  Up until then, they had let the government decide matters and that had led to fascist or Communist dictators, World War II, and the Holocaust.  The Mandarins argues the only possible government for France is liberal democracy.   The female characters are strong, independent, daring, and aggressive.  The characters are believed to have been based on the people in the author's life. If you collect banned books, this is a novel you want on your library shelf. Both The Second Sex and The Mandarins have been banned by the Vatican.
