Dracula, for which Edward Gorey created the set designs reproduced in miniature here, compresses the action to one locale: the sanatorium of Dr. Seward. This set design was used in nearly 1,000 Broadway performances.

One common theme found within gothic novels is Victorian sexuality. Europe saw a rise in conservatism during the mid to late 1800s. Novels such as Dracula used terrifying depictions of repression as a way to comment upon popular views of sexuality while also highlighting society's fears of sexual liberation. Dracula was never officially banned on a large scale. However, it was the subject of much controversy. If you are a collector of banned books, adaptions of Dracula are ones you want in your library.
