Girl with a Pearl Earring is a 1999 historical novel written by Tracy Cevalier. Set in 17th-century Delft, Holland, the novel was inspired by local painter Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. The novel was adapted into a 2003 film and a 2008 play. In May 2020, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a new dramatisation of the novel. The novel was banned in Iran in 2006. "The new government intends to take positive steps for reviving neglected values and considering religious teachings in the cultural field". This may be in response to the book being sexually explicit. If you are a collector of banned books, this book is one you want on your shelf.
