I read "The Stranger" in one of my existentialism classes as a philosophy major at Indiana University. "The Stranger" by Albert Camus is an important work because it explores themes that are central to his philosophy, including absurdity and existentialism. The novel also highlights other themes, such as the meaninglessness of human life, the irrationality of the universe, and the existential crisis of the main character, Meursault. It sparked major controversy in France for its bleak philosophy on life's meaning and portrayal of a detached, emotionally numb protagonist. It was challenged as recently as 2016 in Texas for "offense to religious sensitivities." Camus is taught at Indiana University as part of the philosophy program primarily because it offers a compelling introduction to existentialism and the philosophy of absurdism. The novel's exploration of meaninglessness, alienation, and the human condition makes it a rich text for discussion and critical thinking.
