The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by author L. Frank Baum in 1900. A girl named Dorothy ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog are swept away from their home on a Kansas farm by a tornado. In 1928, all public libraries in Chicago banned the book for being "ungodly" due to its depiction of a woman in a leadership role. It has been additionally challenged for its use of magic, depiction of witches, and political values. Since then, the novel has been adapted to stage and screen numerous times, including the 1939 movie production starring Judy Garland and "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West". That was a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which was the basis of the Broadway play and feature film of the same name. This is a wonderful story that has been celebrated over the last century despite censorship attempts.
