STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS 1897 Hardcover

Regular price $75.00

This is an 1897 hardcover edition of Arabian Nights published by the American Book Company. Titles on the spine have darkened and are difficult to read. School library identification marks inside front cover and on the front end page.

The Arabian Nights is a collection of Middle Eastern folktales compiled in the Arabic language during the Islamic Golden Age. The stories are set within a framing device, the main story in which the various other tales are enfolded. King Shahryar of Persia is betrayed by his first wife, who has taken another lover. In a rage, Shahryar kills her and all those responsible for her crimes. Critics have deemed the book obscene due to its explicit descriptions of sexual acts, which has caused the folktales to be censored in Egypt. Easily the greatest work of non-religious Arabic literature, The Arabian Nights helped to unite numerous cultures under the umbrella of a new Islamic civilization during the Golden Age. If you celebrate the freedom to read, this antiquarian edition of The Arabian Night would be a perfect edition to your library.
