1883 THE MODERN SPHINX AND SOME OF HER RIDDLES 1st Edition MJ Savage Hardcover
This is the first edition of "The Modern Sphinx and Some of her Riddles," written by MJ Savage and published by Geo. H. Ellis, Boston in 1883. The cover is green with gilt design elements and lettering to the spine and front cover. The cover has minor scuffing and rubbing to the boards and corners. Overall structure is very good. There is damage to the front end page in the lower right corner. On the first blank page, there are stamps indicating a name, the Town of Independance, OR, and the date of 1886. Pages are tanned, and edges have foxing.
I added this book to my collection because "The Modern Sphinx and Some of Her Riddles" is a collection of essays that explore various riddles and enigmas of life, such as the meaning of existence, the nature of God, and the purpose of suffering. As a philosophy major in college, these are topics I find interesting. The author draws on his experience as a Unitarian minister to offer thoughtful perspectives on these complex issues. I have often attended Unitarian Universalists churches because they host banned book festivals called Unstoppable Stories. The festivals aim to celebrate people's experiences and inspire social justice. Most of the books in my collection have been banned or challenged at some point, so I am proud to offer "The Modern Sphinx and Some of Her Riddles" as part of my library.
