Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë — Everyman’s Library #287 (1950 Copyright Edition)

Regular price $95.99

A thoughtful and enduring edition of Jane Eyre from the distinguished Everyman’s Library series, copyright 1950 and first issued in this format in 1908 as volume #287. Bound in the classic Everyman style and accompanied by its original dust jacket, now protected inside a clear archival-quality sleeve.

The dust jacket remains in good vintage condition with visible wear at the hinges,  including small tears, holes and edge chipping consistent with age. The front endpaper contains writing in pencil.

Part gothic romance, part philosophical coming-of-age novel, Jane Eyre follows the life of an orphaned young woman who insists on preserving her moral independence and inner dignity in a world determined to reduce her value. Jane’s relationship with the mysterious Edward Rochester becomes not merely a romance, but a meditation on conscience, class, freedom, suffering, and the search for an authentic self.

Though widely celebrated today, the novel was considered controversial upon publication in 1847. Critics attacked its emotional intensity, religious questioning, and especially Jane herself — a poor woman who spoke openly with intellectual and moral authority. Some Victorian readers viewed the novel as dangerously rebellious because it challenged traditional expectations of women’s obedience and social submission. The book has also appeared on school challenge lists over the years for themes involving sexuality, religion, and female autonomy.

Collectors continue to seek Everyman’s Library editions because they represent one of the great early efforts to make classic literature accessible to ordinary readers while maintaining beautiful, durable production standards. Jane Eyre remains one of the defining works of philosophical fiction: a novel that asks whether love without equality is meaningful, and whether personal integrity is worth the cost of loneliness.

A timeless addition for collectors of classic literature, gothic fiction, feminist literature, and vintage Everyman’s Library books.
