Alfred Tennyson, 1809 –  1892, was an English poet. He was the Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign. Many of his poems are about the temptation to give up and fall prey to pessimism, but they also extol the virtues of optimism and discuss the importance of struggling with life.  Knowledge of the lurid history of Tennyson’s family is essential for understanding critic's opposition to  themes of madness, murder, social climbing, and marriages for money instead of love that are present in his poetry. If you celebrate the freedom to read, this gorgeous 1882 collection of poetry is a great addition to your library.
