First published in 1936, "Absalom, Absalom!" is widely considered William Faulkner's masterpiece and one of the finest works in American literature. It has also been described as the most important novel by any white American writer to confront the problem of race. Taking place before, during, and after the American Civil War, it is a story about three families of the American South, with a focus on the life of Thomas Sutpen. Faulkner’s inclusion of then-daring topics such as incest and lust against a backdrop of fratricide and slavery were controversial, and many Southern readers considered Faulkner’s exposure of social hypocrisy, to be an act of betrayal.  If you celebrate the freedom to read, "Absalom, Absalom!" Is an excellent addition to your library shelf.
