P.L. Travers's Mary Poppins books are considered extraordinary children's books because they explore the relationship between adults and children through a combination of social critique and mythological references. Travers's playful approach to reality and rejection of unnecessary rules argue for the importance of fantasy and myth throughout life. The books are full of references to Greek deities, the Bible, and Sufi parables, and some critics have compared Travers's work to William Blake, Zen Buddhism, and the Hindu goddess Kali.  Mary Poppins was banned from circulation in the San Francisco Public Library system in 1980 due to negative stereo typing.  Pollack-Pelzner wrote in the New York Times that Mary Poppins isn't actually racist. He’s just pointing out that people say and do racist things in original P.L. Travers Mary Poppins books. If you celebrate the freedom to read, Mary Poppins books are an excellent addition to your library.
