Plato’s Republic – 1942 First Edition, Fourth Printing – W. W. Norton & Company

Regular price $83.99

This particular copy of The Republic holds a special place in my heart—not just as a collector, but as someone who majored in philosophy and spent late nights in dim dorm rooms trying to make sense of Socratic justice and the ideal city-state.

Printed in 1942 by W. W. Norton & Company, this is their first edition, fourth printing of the classic, reimagined by I.A. Richards using Basic English—a fascinating linguistic experiment meant to make great ideas more accessible. It’s a thoughtful edition for both the curious newcomer and the seasoned reader looking to revisit Plato through a different lens.

Now, let’s talk condition (because like all things philosophical, beauty here is in the details). The dust jacket is missing a piece from the front cover, and the bottom of the inside flap has been clipped—small losses, perhaps, but ones that add character. It’s now housed in a Brodart protective wrapper, because even flawed wisdom deserves safeguarding. The book is slightly cocked, and there’s light foxing along the top edge of the pages—a soft patina of time. You’ll also find a bit of pencil writing on the front end page, evidence of a previous thinker’s presence.

Plato’s Republic was one of the first texts that challenged how I thought about justice—not just as a legal idea, but as a moral compass. Written around 375 BC, it questions what it means to live rightly in an often irrational world.  In Plato's Republic, the character Socrates serves as the primary speaker and philosophical guide, exploring questions of justice, the ideal state, and the nature of the human soul. In reality, Socrates, with his maddening questions and fearless logic, stirred up quite the political storm—enough to be sentenced to death by the state. Yet through Plato’s pen, his voice still speaks to us centuries later.

If you’re the kind of person who finds joy in old books and timeless ideas, I think you’ll appreciate this one. It’s not just a book—it’s a conversation partner that never quite leaves the room.
