Plato's Republic was one of the first works I read in college as a philosophy major. It was authored by Plato around 375 BC. The work discusses justice, such as the nature of a just city-state and the just man. Socrates received much criticism for teaching his rabbelrousing philosophies. He was eventually executed by the Athenian government for impiety and corrupting the youth. The Republic became Plato's best-known work and one of the world's most influential works of philosophy, which is why it is often one of the first works taught in college.
