1946 THE SOUND AND THE FURY & AS I LAY DYING William Faulkner Moder Library...

Regular price $53.00

I love to collect Modern Library books because of the vintage style used on their dust jackets. They also print their catalog of books on the underside of the dust jacket,  which is unique to their series. This book includes two of William Faulkner's novels: "The Sound and the Fury" and "As I Lay Dying" which were published by Modern Library in 1946. The dust jacket shows wear around the edges and has been placed in a clear archival wrapper for protection. The book's boards and the binding are sound. The interior pages do not have any obvious signs of inscriptions, marginalization, or having been dog-eared.

American novelist William Faulkner is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Published in 1929, the Sound and the Fury is noted for his unique writing style, Faulkner employs stream of consciousness. I, however, keep a copy of this book in my library because it is an important anti-slavery work of literature.  The novel is set in the postbellum American South, after Reconstruction, and explores the redefining of values in the absence of slavery. A number of schools have banned his books because his books questioned the existence of God. I think this is understandable, and probably what makes some people angry,  because if you are  an abused slave this is exactly what you might find yourself doing.  In 1949, Faulkner went on to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
