Part gothic romance and part philosophical coming-of-age novel, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre follows a woman determined to preserve her moral independence and dignity in a world that repeatedly attempts to confine her.
This literary artwork interprets Jane’s journey through three recurring ideas: the Red Room, the birdcage, and fire.
At the center, a young woman holds an open birdcage as a bird emerges. Flames surround it against a metallic red background, transforming an image of captivity into one of release.
The Symbolism
The Red Room represents Jane’s childhood punishment, fear, and powerlessness. Its intense red dominates the background, carrying that early experience of confinement into the larger story.
The Birdcage draws on Brontë’s imagery of birds, flight, captivity, and freedom. The open cage represents the roles others attempt to impose upon Jane, while the escaping bird embodies her refusal to surrender her independent self—even for love.
Fire carries a double meaning throughout the novel: destruction, but also passion, revelation, and transformation. Here, the flames surround the escaping bird rather than consume it. Jane must pass through suffering before she can determine the conditions of her own life.
Together, these symbols reflect one of the novel’s central tensions: the struggle to love deeply without becoming imprisoned by love.
First published in 1847, Jane Eyre was controversial for its emotional intensity, religious questioning, and outspoken heroine. Victorian critics were particularly unsettled by a poor young woman who claimed intellectual and moral authority and challenged expectations of female obedience. The novel remains celebrated for its exploration of conscience, class, freedom, equality, and female autonomy.

Each print is hand embellished with metallic red paint on the background, red glitter on the flames, and three-dimensional black paint enhancing the henna-inspired linework. My signature is concealed within the ornamental design. Because the embellishments are applied by hand, each finished piece has subtle individual variations.
As a literary artist and philosopher, I create work that merges story, symbol, and ornament, drawing on the legacy of rare books, henna-inspired design, and the timeless questions literature provokes.
