1910 JANE EYRE Charlotte Bronte, Grosset & Dunlap hardcover

This vintage hardcover edition of Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' was printed in the United States by Grosset & Dunlap circa 1910. It contains the original inscription by the author using the pen name Currer Bell dated 1847 in order to hide her identity being a woman.  The book is in good condition for its age, with minor wear and tear on the cover and pages. It has an Owner's name on the front end page and the hinges cracked. All pages are intact. Two of Grosset & Dunlap's advertisements are at the back of the book.

Jane Eyre is an important piece of literature because the main character is a strong feminist symbol, arguing through the whole novel that women should be free to fulfill their desires, express their true natures, and chart their own destinies. Many Victorians considered it “coarse and immoral”. Not only might the book encourage young girls to lust after darkly dangerous figures like Edward Rochester, it also seemed to promote rebellion through its orphan heroine who insists on her own worth and does not express gratitude for the “charity” extended to her.
