Where the Wild Things Are is a children's book by Maurice Sendak that was published in 1963 and is considered groundbreaking for its honest portrayal of children's emotions. The story is about a mischievous boy who escapes into a world of imagination after being sent to bed without dinner. The book teaches children about anger, growth, fear, frustration and jealousy. The story has been banned for a variety of reasons, including its depiction of witchcraft and some readers believe that it promotes child abuse because the story includes fear, punishment, and escape. Psychologists have called it "too dark". If you celebrate the freedom to read, this is a excellent book for your library.
